On November 17, 2016 NGOHouse hosted a seminar on “Stateless people – Recognition of and protection from arbitrary detention” organised by the Foundation for access to rights – FAR. The participants had the opportunity to inspect and obtain a copy of the published report based on field research in Bulgaria on “Protection of Stateless Persons of arbitrary detention.” Videos on the topic were also presented and discussed in the form of real case studies.
The aim of the seminar was to raise awareness and practical application of relevant standards under international law (UN, Council of Europe), European Union law and Bulgarian law. During the event were also discussed the Bill on the procedure for recognition of the status of stateless persons in Bulgaria. The bill was passed on first reading in the National Assembly and introduced for the first time as a national law a procedure to establish statelessness in an effort for Bulgaria to comply with the Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons, ratified by the country in 2012.
The initiative is implemented in partnership with the European Network for stateless persons (http://www.statelessness.eu/), of which FAR is a member.
