In the day of Vasilica or the Roma New Year – 14th of January, a group of young “surwakari” (a Bulgarian tradition according to which children go from house to house wishing good fortune to people by singing and patting them on the back with a decorated stick) from second and third grade in St. St. Kiril and Metodii Elementary School Malorad, Vraca District, filled the House with joy. The children danced, performed the “surwakari” tradition and made wishes for heath and fruitfulness. In this way the residents of the House became part of their celebration of the advent of the New Year. The kids were surprised with gifts and delicious snacks
According to the Roma tradition 14th of January is the most important day of the year. It is believed that the upcoming year will be alike the first guest one welcomes to their home. Well it seems that the new year for the House will be a lucky one as our first guests were the most important, cheerful and good people – the children.
The visit young “surwakari” in the House was organized by the Center for Interethnic Dialog and Tolerance Amalipe.
